6 Super easy tips for retail display

The main aim of retailers all over the world is to keep their cash registers ringing. For this it is not just enough to have good quality products but also arrange them in a way that attracts the customer’s attention. As customers are spoilt for choice and with too much stuff pulling the attention away this can be a tough task.

If you ask any retailers what they want in order to display items more successfully they would say more retail space and more money. Let’s see some tips to quickly get the most out of limited space and a low display budget.

1. Highlight a particular product

If a single product is arranged in a dedicated display then it gains more attention than when it is positioned among other products in the display. This makes the customer think that there is something special with the product. This type of display is especially useful when there are special offers, discounts or when a new product is launched. It is simple and does not require too much effort.

2. Use vertical and horizontal space equally.

Retailers usually think of utilizing space that is proportionate to the eye level of the customer. This is due to the fact that many customers browse shelves and displays that are directly in their line of vision. But this view is wrong, any space whether above or below the customer’s field of view can be efficiently dressed up as good retail displays. If the customer can see the area then it is more than enough. Most retailers neglect the upper area of the store whereas this area can be spruced up with hanging accessories and other innovative ideas to create an area of interest.
3. Light up

Lights can be used effectively to showcase a particular display; just like spotlights enhance a play or any stage show, they can also be used to highlight a particular product. This is especially true in cases where a new product is launched and it has to be given the maximum attention. A dull area can also be transformed with soft lights and complementing accessories to play up the mood. Even Christmas lights or fairy lights can do the trick. The only thing to keep in mind is that the lighting should not overshadow the product. The product should hold center stage no matter what.
4. The more the merrier

Retailers and visual merchandisers have an inherent fear of going overboard with the display. But when it is to attract the customer every rule in the book can be broken. Innovative and edgy display accessories invite glances from the crowd of shoppers and over the top displays usually attract crowds. The only thing to take care of while going overboard is to not make it garish or tacky. It should go along with the overall design and ambience of the store and complement its general appearance. This technique of increasing visual appeal accessories will depend upon your general display techniques i.e. whether you are generally drawn towards minimalistic or towards heavy displays.
5. Colour to catch attention

Use of colour can give a distinct look to a retail display. A single block of colour can immediately garner attention rather than a jumble of colours. You get the same with following a two colour combination. Here again you have to maintain a balance with the overall colour theme of the store as too much contrast can cause a jarring effect.
6. Change displays often

A display that sits too long in the store can be dull and monotonous. The customers have seen it a lot of times and have stopped looking at the products in the display. This needless to say, adversely affects sales. So the retailer and the visual merchandiser have to find out new techniques and methods of retail display to keep things alive and interesting. Switching products, trying new and creative arrangements and finding new display ideas etc should be done on a regular basis.

In a fiercely competitive market the retailers have to be one step ahead of both customers and other competition. They have to be on the look out for new ideas and trends in the industry. Keeping up with the pulse of the industry will help create more effective displays and in turn drive up sales.
